While Loudoun County’s restaurant scene abounds with Oriental and Asian cooking such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and Japanese, there are not as many places that offer Burmese cuisine. It was just that that A Taste of Burma opened in Sterling’s Countryside Shopping Center. Burma is the former name of Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country best known for its ancient pagodas.
A Taste of Burma is a small, cozy and beautifully designed restaurant. Exquisite handmade tapestries called kalagas adorn the walls, and fine lacquerware are displayed in lighted niches. It is a fitting setup for an exotic Asian dine-out with family and friends.
The menu shows some one hundred items, many of which suggest the Indian, Chinese and Thai flavors that have influenced Burmese cooking. Burmese Cuisine has a distinct taste of its own, though. For starters there are several tempura, samosa and spring roll options. Order the House Special Tempura, a delightful medley of shrimp, vegetables, and spring rolls or the Fried Yellow Burmese Tofu, crispy chickpea tofu served with tamarind chili sauce. For a Burmese twist to an Indian turnover, have a Golden Samosa filled with potatoes and onions.
Burmese cuisine is distinguished by its variety of salads and noodle dishes. Check out Amethar Thoke, reminiscent of Thai beef salad, consisting of sliced grilled beef with fresh onions, cabbage, cilantro leaves and a chili-lime dressing. For superior Singapore Street Noodles, try Kyarzan Gyaw made of thin rice noodles with curry and chicken, beef or shrimp. It is quite common in Burmese cooking to blend fruits and vegetables to create a dish. Green Mango Salad is a colorful potpourri of raw mango, cabbage, herbs, nuts, onion and chili.
Main courses include dozens of vegetable dishes often served with garlic, chili, coconut curry or tamarind sauce; and various beef, chicken fish and shrimp curries. Vegetarians can opt for Water Spinach Stir-Fried with Garlic, or the Sweet & Sour Tofu. An interesting combination for meat lovers is Pork and Mango-marinated pork cooked in mango sauce.
With your Loudoun Rewards Savings Card, you get FREE spring rolls or samosa with an order of a lunch special, on every visit, Monday to Friday. That’s considerable savings every time you slip away from work for a scrumptious lunch at A Taste of Burma!
